What’s your Google Quotient or GQ?

As Reach’s OnlineIDCalculator website says “Today, if you don't show up in Google, you don't exist. Whether you are applying for a new job, being considered for a board position or trying to get a date, you can count on being Googled. So knowing what Google says about you and proactively managing your personal brand online is critical to success.”

The Google Quotient calculation involves counting both the total number of hits you get on the first three pages of results that are about you and the number of hits related to the value proposition or “brand identity” you want to create for yourself.

How to Measure & Improve Your Google Quotient?
Quality of results
It is important that the results are related to the skills and value proposition you want to be known for.
Besides the popularity of your Blog/Website, the quality of your GQ depends upon the quality of websites you write / guest blog for. The quality of results also means that the results are about you and not someone else with same name, they contain diverse content (video & images) and they also contain testimonials, recommendations and other validation of your work.

Quantity of results
The quantity is initially low (when you start your digital journey) but as you work more on your online branding, it increases with exponential growth. When you start becoming successful and credible, more and more people have pride in associating with you and therefore more people start talking about you.

Your offline activities can boost your brand too and impact your online brand and vice-versa.

Actually more than your name, it is more important to have good quality and quantity for the keywords in your industry. For example if you are a neurosurgeon in Gurgaon, what is important is whether your name appears in first 3 pages, when people search for "neurosurgeons in Gurgaon"

Google as a motivation tool
In my journey of Personal Branding, Google has thrown the highest number of surprises. The first surprise was when I came to know that Forbes.com had featured my article “Discover Your Deepest Passion”.The second was even bigger. Google (search results) only informed me that I am among the 100 most influential Indians online. The third surprise was to see my article, “How to use Linkedin to develop a Powerful Personal Brand?” mentioned among the “Best of the Best resources on Linkedin” (Career Management/Personal Branding).

Though I am based in Delhi, but a Hindustan Times journalist based in Mumbai called me up for a story on personal branding, by finding me on Google. Recently I was invited to address CXOs on personal branding at Ananda Spa, because the organizers found me via Google.
